We love the look and feel of fine porcelain cups and gaiwans. Using a delicately crafted vessel with clean lines and beautiful proportions helps us appreciate the art in tea brewing. A white porcelain gaiwan is our favorite medium to use when evaluating new teas. Unlike metals or cured Yixing clays, porcelain offers itself as a neutral vessel for tea.
A simple white background allows us to appreciate the pure color of the tea and offers a nice contrast for examining the brewed leaf. Delicate tea aromas have a lovely way of clinging to the porcelain lid. We like to drink out of small porcelain cups and enjoy that "bottom of the cup" fragrance after each sip.
See and learn about some of the vintage gaiwans in the Tea Gallery collection at Dae's Journal.
