Shizuoka Red
We were happy to discover a lush and sweet red tea from a country that is famous for their traditional green teas. A modern take using traditional tea methods; this fully oxidized tea is a delicious novelty that has been in development for some years. Not expecting much from a relatively new tea, we were pleasantly surprised by the flowery aroma and clarity of the lovely hue. It had a slender body with a smooth texture and just a trace of tannins. Dae and Winnie were reminded of sun-ripened berries and Chinese dates. Even the finish was a soft, closing statement, leaving just a trace of sweetness on the palate. Unlike the robustness of Chinese red teas, this Japanese version is comparable to the red teas of Taiwan. Sweet and delicate with a sophisticated restraint.

Details
Shizuoka is a prefecture in Japan that is well known for high quality senchas (green tea) and the small family operated tea-farms that still use traditional production methods. Home of Mount Fuji, it's hilly terrain and foggy weather provides an ideal home for lush tea bushes with a naturally sweet flavor.
The Shizuoka Red is a blend of the Yabukita and Fujimidori cultivars. The leaves are withered up to three days to produce the rich red color and sweetness.
While this modern red/black tea can handle Western style brewing, adding cream and sweeteners will mute some of the delicate, floral notes.
