  Red Peony Teapot
 
 
A sweet buff colored Yixing teapot with a delicate rendering of a peony and butterfly. The naturally occurring yellow clay is known as duan-ni. The subtle speckling and slightly roughened surface gives us a pleasantly sandy texture. It's simple in shape and styling so as not to distract from the detail rich illustration on one side of the teapot. There's a lovely balance as the colors of the flower and butterfly have been muted to harmonize with the gentle background. We're particularly fond of this clay because of the vivid change from dry to wet. When cured with a darker roast tea, the hue will deepen considerably over several uses.
