Plum Blossom Teapot
This example of Yixing artistry from the 1980's is a study in beautiful restraint. Plum blossoms have long been a popular motif on teapots and while some teapots are fashioned to resemble an actual piece of branch complete with fruit and flowers, here the artist uses organic details sparingly. The glowing, high quality clay is meant to be appreciated in a simple, classic shape. The handle is represented as a supple branch from which a small spray of blossoms extends and wraps around the smooth, round body. Subtle, raised wood knots decorate the spout carrying the theme of a living plum branch. The lid and finial is left unadorned in clean lines. The stamp on this teapot is not personalized and doesn't give us any useful information. This eloquent piece may have been crafted by a student apprenticed in the workshop of a recognized master. Anonymous heritage aside, the skillwork and richness of the clay tells us all we really need to know.
