Da Yu Ling Sampler
If Oriental Beauty is the beloved Queen of Taiwanese Oolong, then the world famous Da Yu Ling just might be the well repsected King. A light bodied oolong with a surprisingly rich flavor and long lasting layers of fruit and flowers underlined by a delicious creaminess. Well structured with a hint of mineral and able to withstand several steeps. On our trip we came across two excellent examples and decided to share both. The chief difference in taste, texture and qi being a matter of meters between them.
The first Da Yu Ling was harvested at an impressive 2500 meters. Once heated, a delicate orchid fragrance clung to our brewing implements and our cups. The pale green infusion was sweet and buttery with strong honeydew notes that lingered on the palate. After a few more steeps, a soft toasty aroma emerged from the wet leaf and the tea was smooth with a richly velvet texture. Floral notes returned with a cooling finish that turned minty on the breath. Our second Da Yu Ling comes from a chilly 2700 meters. The difference in elevation becomes apparent with the initial fragrance of the heated leaves. We were treated to soft florals and musk that reminded us of a vintage perfume. An assertive sweetness presented itself in the first cup and sank right into the taste buds. Fresh layers of fruit, flowers and a hint of cream quickly followed. We picked up a savory mineral note in subsequent steeps along with sweet, custardy mangosteen and a refreshing pineapple tartness. The chaqi warmed our core and gave us a craving for dessert. A great way to taste and learn the difference of a couple hundred meters.

Both of our 2009 Winter Harvest Da Yu Ling oolongs are lightly roasted and come from the Taichung County in Taiwan.
Only the tea trees planted at 2400 meters above sea level and up are considered true Da Yu Ling and make this some of the highest grown tea in the world. Because of the naturally chilly climate found at such high elevations, this high mountain tea is is slow to grow and yields small harvests. Since production is limited, much of the highly sought after, premium harvest is spoken for in advance.
We love the flavor profiles and aromas of both teas and enjoy them on their own depending on our mood but a side by side tasting will really help you appreciate their differences. Otherwise, start with the lower elevation 2500m Da Yu Ling before drinking the 2700m Da Yu Ling.
