Autumn Melon Teapot
A dark Yixing beauty from the 1980's, also referred to as pumpkin or gourd shape. The smooth clay has a natural burnished glow and we love the classic appeal of the natural styling. Subtle melon grooves and organic shape is carried to the softly rounded bottom of the teapot. The sharply edged lid topped with the segmented finial nicely balances the generous curves of the teapot. There are beautifully nuanced details like the melon leaf wrapped spout and the handle carved into the shape of a young vine. The stamp on the underside of the pot simply indicates that it is Yixing made. This was most likely the work of an emerging artist apprenticed to the workshop of a more established artist. Winnie refers to these as "student pots", teapots that were made to demonstrate a mastery classical technique and proportion before the artist could create original works. Pots like these are in higher demand due to the quality of the clay and craftsmanship.
